Is Propecia or Proscar best for hair loss?

Male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are commonly caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone is formed due to the binding of testosterone with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT is a necessary component in the development of the male reproductive system. Some of these hormones stray from their intended purpose when they are attracted to the androgen receptors of hair follicles. This would result in the blockage of nutrients that the hair follicles receive from the blood supply causing its shrinkage. Hair loss would then result from this process. The enlargement of the prostate gland on the other hand, causes BPH from the presence of DHT in the system. It is the accumulation of DHT that is said to be the reason for this though much is yet to be understood about BPH.

Treatment for either male pattern baldness or BPH has been found through the drug finasteride. This works as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor effectively preventing it from binding with testosterone. DHT is hardly formed as a result of having finasteride in the system. It does however present a new set of situations because DHT is necessary for other normal bodily functions especially for the male reproductive system.

Finasteride is sold as Propecia to treat male pattern baldness while Proscar is what is used to remedy BPH. The finasteride content is one milligram and five milligrams respectively. Both drugs are orally ingested and should be taken daily for maximum effectivity. Its effects may only become apparent about six months into the treatment. The recommended time for observation however is after one year. Some patients have actually tried using Proscar to treat male pattern baldness due to its higher finasteride content. This is not recommended because the correct dosage to treat androgenic alopecia is only one milligram of finasteride.

Females are advised not to use Propecia because of hirsutisic side effects it generates. Finasteride can increase hair growth and density in women however it will also encourage the same on the face, back and chest area. Continued use may also deepen a woman’s voice. Pregnant women are not allowed to take this drug or risk complications in the development of the fetus. Children are likewise banned from ingesting this medication for any treatment whatsoever.

The risk of side effects should make people wary from taking finasteride. Impotence along with a low sperm count has been proven to occur from its use. It has also been found that these as well as other sexually related side effects such as decreased libido persist despite discontinuing treatment. Proscar can also cause prostate as well as male breast cancer. Studies have shown that these side effects can occur at a minimum of two percent out of all those that take this drug. It is not however, an accurate representation. Other studies claim to have a higher rate of occurrence. What is to be remembered is that these side effects are quite real and have happened to other individuals in the past no matter the percentage rate.

An alternative hair loss remedy is to get a scalp micropigmentation treatment. This amazing method actually dispenses with the need to regrow hair. It requires that all existing hair be shaved off to maximize its results. Colored pigments are layered on top of a patient’s scalp in such a way as to mimic “just-shaven” hair. It has no serious side effects and the results of a completed treatment are apparent after about two to three days of recovery time. The patient simply has to remember to shave his hair every couple of days, clean his scalp daily and to keep it moisturized.
